100th Anniversay Calgary Stampede Finals   Leave a comment

The Calgary Stampede Rodeo is the world’s richest tournament-style rodeo, featuring over $2 million in prize money. Contestants are divided into two pools. The top four money winners in each pool advance to Showdown Sunday. The remaining six competitors in each pool compete on Wild Card Saturday. The top two in each event advance to Showdown Sunday – Rodeo’s Richest Afternoon with over $1 million to be given away. It all leads up to a one shot, go-for-broke performance with winners taking home the Calgary Stampede Championship and $100,000.

Opening day of the finals was really exciting. Wow, to be in the stands for the 100 year anniversary.

Beginning with the calf roping. Everyone was rooting for their favorite cowboy.

The bareback bucking broncos.

The Steer Wrestling

It started to rain not long after the opening of the rodeo. One of the funniest events was the bucking bronco that would not come out of the pen! I think maybe he didn’t want to work in the rain. That cowboy did his best, but that horse just seemed to stand there, looking out at the wet grounds. They ended up closing the pen and retrying. He “eventually” came out and gave that cowboy quite a ride.

The woman’s barrel racing is one of my favorite events. The woman pictured below is a rookie at 53 years old. It just shows you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

As the rain just kept coming, the contestants seemed to be slipping and sliding in the mud, which made it all that more exciting. Check out the bull rider below.

During halftime, the John Deere came out to smooth out the playing field for the rest of the rodeo. What a mess it was. It seemed to be a pile of water and mud.

Out came the calf roping. Now, you have to keep the calf standing until you jump off the horse to tie it. Hard to keep him standing in the slippery mud.

The bucking broncos where having a terrible time slipping and sliding in the mud. I actually got a short movie of the cowboy whose horse went up on his hind legs and fell backward onto the cowboy! OUCH!

The Calgary Stampede is one of the finest rodeos ever.
